It’s Bloomsday Again

Once again I haven’t read ULYSSES by James Joyce. I tried but gave up. I am not ashamed because I am in good company, most of mankind that is. To save you the trouble of reading the first 30 odd pages, here is a synopsis. The rest of it would seem to be more or less similar.

  1. Hi there, Nathan. That’s a Martello Tower repurposed for living. The towers had been built by Brits in case Napoleon set his eyes on Ireland. The third character in that scene, Haines, is an English student/tourist who plans to collect Irish sayings for a book.

Deasy is another Royalist, which puts Stephen in an humiliating position—having to wait to be paid. Deasy’s antisemitism anticipates the later appearance of Bloom, the Everyman in the novel. Joyce’s use of a Jewish hero in an Irish novel was very new, given Ireland’s ethnocentric brand of nationalism.

Just wanted to chime in. Happy Bloomsday!
