Problem solved, more or less: there are ball bearings either side of the basket to hold it steady. The adjustable steel bearing races weren’t tight enough, which allowed the basket to wobble. Tightening up the race on one side removed most of the free play and now the alignment is much improved.
Fabulous score! I’ve had good luck with German machines this year in thrifts, but Have yet to see a Swede in my hunting grounds! 😀

That alignment is really weird, though. I don’t have a theory about it, but it shouldn’t be that way.
Do you suppose the whole basket is moving? How would this be stabilized?
